Mandatory Qualifications
Interns must be 16 years old by June 10th, 2024. River City High School students must have completed at least one course in one of WUSD’s Career Technical Education Pathways. View qualifying courses here. Yolo High School and Washington Middle College students must have a recommendation form filled out by a teacher or counselor. All participants must have also viewed an online informational session about the internships offered by the Home Run team. Responsibilities
The intern will will work with farm staff in planting, harvesting, field preparation, fertilization, pest management, irrigation, and animal care using organic and regenerative growing practices. If the intern is able, there will also be opportunities for them to work at the weekly farm stand in Davis.
About the Business
Fiery Ginger Farm is a diverse fruit and vegetable farm growing produce mainly for the institutional markets such as school districts. We raise some animals on the farm as well. We also provide educational opportunities for local students.
Preferred Abilities
The intern should be willing to work physically without complaint. Additionally, self motivation, positive attitude, and attention to detail are desired characteristics for this position.
Learning outcomes
The intern will learn the practices used to grow produce organically and sustainably.
The intern will learn to work as part of a team and develop effective communication skills as a team member.
The intern will learn to construct caterpillar tunnel structures that allow for more consistent vegetable production in winter months.
Special Project
The intern will have the opportunity to help construct growing tunnels which are being added to the farm this year.
