Mandatory Qualifications

Interns must be 16 years old by June 10th, 2024. River City High School students must have completed at least one course in one of WUSD’s Career Technical Education Pathways. View qualifying courses here. Yolo High School and Washington Middle College students must have a recommendation form filled out by a teacher or counselor. All participants must have also viewed an online informational session about the internships offered by the Home Run team. Responsibilities

WUSD Summer Institute Intern:

Interns for the WUSD Summer Insititute will support Kindergarten through 8th Grade students as they learn and have fun! They will support the program by being art docents, facilitating games at recess time, organizing and distributing supplies, and running a weekly raffle, as well as supporting students in classrooms.


Educational Services:

Interns will be working in the Summer Break program supporting the adult staff and students in the classroom, outdoor activities, lunch supervision, and escorting students around the campus as needed. Interns will have the opportunity to lead group activities under the supervision of the adult staff member and also work with small groups of children as needed. The interns will not be in charge of a class by themselves as they will be paired with an adult at all times

About the Business

WUSD Summer Institute Intern:
Each year, Washington Unified conducts a Summer Institute for students in Grades K through 8, who are either English Learners, Dual Immersion students, or students in the Special Education Program. This summer's program will serve over 400 students and will be housed at Elkhorn Village Elementary School

Educational Services:
The Washington Unified School District serves ~7800 students a year. The district operates seven TK-8th grade elementary schools, one traditional high school, one alternative high school, and one middle college high school. The district offers expanded learning program opportunities to all WUSD students enrolled in the TK-8th grade school sites. Our department oversees the Expanded Learning Programs which before and after school programming as well as programming during the winter, spring, and summer breaks. We provide homework assistance, recreation, and enrichment activity opportunities that the students would not have had if not enrolled in the program. During the school year, we serve ~1000 in our before and after school programs and serve ~600 students during our break programming.

Special Project

Based on the student intern's interests, their project could be one or more of the following:
-Creating directed art videos on our keystone species (penguins!) to be shown in classrooms
-Developing a schedule of structured games for students to play at recess
-Creating and teaching lessons (under the supervision of the classroom teacher); this can be art, a read-aloud, a game, or anything else!
-Collaboratively plan our culminating field day "Penguin Fun Day" where students cycle through several activity stations, participating in penguin-related games and crafts
-Create a digital yearbook by taking photos and putting together a video or slide deck of students,
activities, and memories
-Buddy program to support individuals or small groups of students

Additional Information

*** There is no work scheduled for the week of July 29th to August 2nd. However, interns should plan to attend the final celebration luncheon on August 2nd. ***

This is a two part internship. Interns will work at WUSD Summer Institute from the start of the internship through early July. The second half of the internship will be with WUSD Educational Services. The hours at Educational Services will be weekdays from 7:30 am - 5:00 pm, flexible as needed.

WUSD Summer Institute Intern runs from June 11th-July11th. The second half is from July 12th-July 26th.
